Nature has always been one of the most important sources of inspiration in architecture and, from the past to the present, has played an influential role in shaping form, structure, ornamentation, function, and spatial quality in buildings. In contemporary conditions, with intensifying environmental crises, high energy consumption in buildings, and the growing need for sustainability, reconsidering the relationship between nature and architecture has become increasingly significant. Despite numerous studies on nature-oriented architecture, much of the existing research has focused on the formal imitation of natural forms. In contrast, the relationships among natural patterns, architectural styles, and environmental functions have been examined less comprehensively. This study adopts a qualitative approach and a descriptive-analytical method, based on library research, analysis of architectural theories, and a comparative study of selected examples of nature-inspired architecture. The findings indicate that the influence of nature on architecture can be examined at five main levels: concept and idea, form and envelope, structure and construction, environmental comfort and sustainability, and ornamentation and meaning-making. The results also show that in historical architecture, nature mainly appeared through symbols, geometry, and ornamentation. In contrast, in contemporary architecture, its role has shifted toward performance, environmental adaptation, energy reduction, and sustainable design. Finally, this study demonstrates that a deeper understanding of the logic and laws of nature can provide a foundation for creating sustainable, creative, and responsive architecture that addresses the needs of both humans and the environment.
