The concept of articulation in traditional Iranian residential architecture and the identification of its characteristics and role constitute a fundamental basis for understanding the hidden principles underlying spatial organization. One of the most significant features of articulation is its capacity to accommodate contrasting qualities within the structural, functional, and semantic dimensions of space. This process reveals a common and concealed system that governs the relationships among spatial elements. In contemporary housing, however, this system has gradually weakened, leading to challenges such as the absence of coherent relationships between spaces, the overlap of private and public domains, and the decline of spatial privacy. The present study aims to identify the characteristics of articulation and to uncover the governing articulation system embedded in traditional Iranian houses. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach. In the first phase, using a qualitative approach and an analytical-documentary strategy, the characteristics of articulation were extracted through a review of library sources, Qur’anic teachings, and the viewpoints of relevant scholars. In the second phase, a quantitative approach was employed through a case study of the Tutunchi Historic House in Shiraz, dating from the Qajar period. Spatial analysis was conducted using observation, field surveys, and Space Syntax techniques. The findings reveal that all spaces and subspaces within Iranian houses of this period operate as components of an integrated articulation system, each defining its position within a tripartite framework consisting of formal, functional, and semantic dimensions. This system enables the coexistence of contrasting characteristics at both intra-spatial and inter-spatial scales. More specifically, the hidden articulation system appears to be inspired by the layered structure of creation and nature, manifesting through horizontal, vertical, and central organizational structures.
