In Islamic arts, meaning and form have often been closely intertwined, as the concept of Divine Unity serves as the foundational principle for artistic creation within the Islamic worldview. This relationship is particularly evident in prayer rugs and their connection to the ritual act of prayer. The primary objective of this research is to examine the symbolic similarities among the motifs of the tree, the prayer niche, and the prostration area in prayer rugs, and to identify their commonalities based on the Islamic worldview. This study is descriptive-comparative in nature. To examine the commonalities between the aforementioned forms—acting as symbols—and the element of prostration, a prayer rug featuring a central tree motif was selected and analyzed in light of the symbolic characteristics of the prayer niche, the tree, and the act of prostration. The findings indicate that for transcendent concepts to manifest in this world, they must inevitably descend in rank and assume a symbolic form. The sacred nature of art stems from the fact that primordial and eternal concepts— belonging to the intelligible realm—manifest within sensible forms; the form belongs to this world, while the substance or meaning belongs to the other. As a locus for the manifestation of sacred art and a place of prostration for Muslims, the prayer rug embodies sacred truths—truths that can be sought within the symbolic meanings of the tree and the prayer niche. Understanding these two symbols depends upon two dimensions of the system: form and meaning, or outward shape and inner substance. Conclusion: The prayer rug featuring a centrally placed tree motif connects to the theme of human spiritual ascension and flight during the act of prostration.
