Abstract
Language is one of the most important means through which social and political identities are formed, represented, and reproduced. Its use is influenced by social factors and interactional contexts. The present study aims to examine the role of social factors in shaping political attitudes and identity-discursive language styles in the everyday interactions of male customers of coffeehouses in Bonab. This qualitative study employed purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 30 male customers of coffeehouses in Bonab and were analyzed using thematic analysis. The theoretical framework of the study was based on the sociology of language, social identity theory, identity-discursive language styles, and, in particular, Allan Bell’s Audience Design Theory. The findings showed that the formation and reproduction of participants’ political attitudes are influenced by communication networks and everyday conversations, lived experiences and generational differences, economic conditions, and social status. Language also plays an active role in representing social and political identities through the use of the distinction between “us” and “them,” evaluative vocabulary, humor, and irony. Accordingly, political attitudes among the participants are not fixed phenomena separate from everyday life; rather, they are formed in connection with social experiences, interpersonal relationships, social status, and interactional contexts, and are represented and reproduced through linguistic and discursive choices. As an informal social space, the coffeehouse provides an important setting for political socialization, the exchange of viewpoints, and the formation and negotiation of social and political identities in everyday life.
