Daylight is a key component of the residential environment that can influence residents' perception and emotional experience of their living space. Despite the expansion of related research, existing findings regarding lighting characteristics, physical conditions, and methods for assessing resident responses are heterogeneous and fail to provide a unified picture of this relationship. This study aimed to analyze the role of daylight in residents' emotional responses within residential environments. A systematic review was conducted, examining English-language studies published between 2000 and June 11, 2025, across databases including PubMed, Scopus, ProQuest, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library. Following screening and the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria, 49 research documents were selected for analysis. The synthesis of findings, focusing on the relationship between daylight and residents' emotional responses, revealed three main themes: timing of exposure, physical and spatial characteristics of the residence, and environmental adaptability and adjustability. Regarding the temporal aspect, the timing and pattern of daylight exposure were associated with variations in the emotional experience and evaluation of the environment. In the physical-spatial dimension, attributes such as window dimensions and orientation, light geometry and distribution, shading, and view quality were linked to subjective and emotional responses—including satisfaction, pleasantness, calmness, and perceived vitality. Finally, regarding adaptability and adjustability, the ability of residents to control lighting conditions was associated with a sense of control, comfort, and a more positive experience of the residential environment. Given the heterogeneity of study designs and assessment methods, the results primarily highlight patterns of association between daylight and emotional responses; they are insufficient for inferring causal relationships or generalizing a single quantitative effect. Accordingly, simultaneous consideration of exposure time, physical-spatial characteristics, and light adjustability can be incorporated into the design of residential environments with the aim of enhancing the emotional experience and the perceived quality of the living space.
